New York State Farm to School Program Request for Proposal

The Department is seeking proposals that will increase the capacity of schools to procure and serve locally produced food items in school meal programs. With over 700 school districts in New York State, there is the opportunity to foster relationships with local farmers, food hubs, producers, processors, and distributors to benefit school-age children. A total of $500,000 is available statewide. Grant awards for this 2 year project will not be less than $25,000 or exceed $100,000.

Objective:

• Increase the volume and variety of local specialty crops procured by schools/districts for inclusion in school meal programs.

Funding Priorities:

• Include projects that bring together multiple districts and those that involve schools/ districts that have a high percentage of free and/or reduced price eligible students.

Eligible applicants include:

• K-12 School Food Authorities

• Charter Schools

• Not-for-profits, including Schools

• Other entities participating in the National School Lunch or Breakfast Programs and/or

operating Summer Food Service Programs

• Indian Tribal Organizations

About the Farm To School Program

• The Program was created to connect schools with local farms and food producers to strengthen local agriculture, improve student health, and promote regional food systems awareness.
