Our 2017 public policy priorities

Hunger Solutions New York has released its 2017 public policy agenda to improve New York's nutrition assistance safety net.

In the coming year, we strive to build on our state's successes by strategically increasing investment in anti-hunger programs on both the state and federal levels. We aim to protect vulnerable populations from losing access to benefits to which they are entitled, and to provide easier access to the programs they need to feed themselves and their families.

We call on federal government leaders to protect federal nutrition programs including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the School Breakfast Program, the National School Lunch Program, the Child and Adult Care Food Program and the Summer Food Service Program from funding cuts, block grants, and other harmful changes that will limit access. Fully funding these programs will help lift families out of poverty and provide the stability needed for individuals to maintain employment. It will provide the nutrition children need to excel in school, and sustenance for seniors, so that they can better manage independently.

We call on state government officials to provide adequate resources to expand the Nutrition Outreach and Education Program, improve access to child nutrition programs, and streamline the administrative processes to make programs more efficient for providers.
