U.S. Senators Roberts and Hoeven Praise SNA for Work on Child Nutrition Reauthorization

In today's Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee's markup of the Improving Child Nutrition Integrity and Access Act child nutrition reauthorization bill, Senators Pat Roberts (R-KS) and John Hoeven (R-ND) made time to show their appreciation of all the School Nutrition Association has done to keep Congress informed and to facilitate a "respectful dialogue and debate" contributing to the advancement of the bill.

"I thank those stakeholders, especially the School Nutrition Association that provided input on this issue, came to the table and negotiated a resolution. We called on folks not to draw lines in the sand or to stand on the sidelines, but to engage in respectful dialogue and debate...and they answered that call," said Senator Roberts.

Senator John Hoeven (R-ND) also thanked the SNA and reiterated the flexibilities needed to support school nutrition professionals in their efforts to improve school meals and protect financial viability.

"The Improving Child Nutrition Integrity and Access Act provides a five year reauthorization of the programs currently authorized by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act. It is important we provide flexibility in key areas; Whole Grains, Sodium, Fruit and Vegetable requirements and Competitive Foods. The School Nutrition Association and the National School Boards Association have agreed to be supportive of this legislation as long as that flexibility is provided. I want to thank both the SNA and NSBA for their willingness to work on this. They are on the front lines every day," said Senator Hoeven.
